House of the Dragon season 2 release, cast plans, and what we know so far

house of dragon season 2

Princess Rhaenys Targaryen (Eve Best) traveled from King's Landing to Dragonstone to let Princess Rhaenyra (Emma D'Arcy) and Prince Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) know that one, King Viserys (Paddy Considine) is dead and two, Aegon has been crowned King by the Hightower-led Greens. Rhaenyra goes into premature labor upon hearing this news, and loses her daughter. Following several time jumps that saw characters age out of their actors, things should slow down as Season 2 focuses more on the Dance of the Dragons, otherwise known as the Targaryen civil war.

'House of the Dragon' season 2 release schedule

The battle divides the realm like no other conflict and has terrible long-lasting consequences for the realm and the Targaryen dynasty. With the second season of House of the Dragon less than two months away, HBO is stoking the fire by releasing a brand new trailer for the series’ anticipated return, which asks the cast to defend their council as the rightful heir to the Iron Throne. With that said, this series has been plotted out for four seasons, and that plan could change, but it’s unlikely that we will see the entire war take place in Season 2. Hopefully, we will at least see the inevitable showdown between Daemon and (Mini-Me) Aemond, and if that plot point follows the Fire and Blood book, both men should be very afraid.

Daemon contacts Mysaria to hire a former City Watch soldier known as Blood and a rat-catcher called Cheese to sneak into the Red Keep. They hold Alicent, Helaena and the latter's three young children captive. She reluctantly chooses Maelor, but they kill the elder Jaehaerys (Aegon's heir) instead. Phia Saban as Queen Helaena Targaryen, Viserys and Alicent's eldest daughter who is married to Aegon and seems to have premonitions.

Is 'Grey's Anatomy' New Tonight? Here's When The Next Episode of 'Grey's Anatomy' Is On ABC And Hulu

After Rhaenyra cuts short her tour of Westeros, Daemon introduces the princess to the Street of Silk after dark. The cast and crew break down everything you need to know before you dive into Season 1. Based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, House of the Dragon is set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones and tells the story of House Targaryen. Season 1 was filmed in several locations in Europe — Cornwall, England; Herfordshire, England; Cáceres, Spain; the Castle of Monsanto in Portugal; and more.

Storyline

After that comes a period of mostly politicking, as both sides recruit houses. "House of the Dragon" season 2 could end with the next major dragon fight, which occurs at Rook's Rest, seat of House Staunton (Team Black). The Greens lay siege to the castle, so Princess Rhaenys flies in on Meleys to lend firepower. Viserys' eldest son, Aegon, has been crowned king after scheming on the part of his mother, grandfather Hand of the King Otto Hightower and (most of) the Small Council. Rhaenyra vows to take back the Iron Throne, but needs the support of other major houses. In keeping with the show’s name, Condal also told Deadline that there are five new dragons joining season 2.

One of that number will be Sunfyre, who is described as "the most beautiful dragon who ever lived", Condal (per EW) says in reference to Martin's novel. "This is not a story of goodies and baddies, black hats and white hats," showrunner and co-creator Ryan Condal told EW. "It's a story of this family that's been rent open by this dispute over who is meant to wear the crown after Viserys passes. The rich tapestry of George R.R. Martin’s 'Fire & Blood' novel is what House of the Dragon's TV adaptation is based on.

The second season of the celebrated series was confirmed by its makers just five days after the premiere of the opening edition. Despite the quick renewal, the follow-up installment is set to be released a whole two years after its predecessors. House of the Dragon Season 2 is a spin-off series in the popular Game of Thrones franchise, created by George R. R. Martin and Ryan Condal. Serving as a prequel to the 2011 show, House of The Dragon draws inspiration from Martin’s 2018 book named Fire & Blood. Following the immense success of season one, its successor is set to drop later this year, with the majority of the cast returning to occupy their roles.

Here's the full episode schedule for 'House of the Dragon' season 2, including the big finale

House of the Dragon is now at that point, where the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons can begin, and to emphasize the two sides at play, HBO has dropped not one, but two trailers for season 2, which premieres June 16. The series is based on George R.R. Martin's in-universe history tome "Fire and Blood," which chronicles the Targaryen family. "House of the Dragon" concentrates on the civil war that takes place about 200 years before the events of "Game of Thrones." Known as the "Dance of the Dragons," the devastating conflict pitted Targaryen against Targaryen.

However, while there may be two clear sides to the fight, the allegiance of the many key figures and players – in true Martin style – are most certainly blurred. If you’re struggling to remember everyone’s names, we don’t blame you. There’s a lot of characters to keep track of, but when season 2 comes to fruition, we know it’ll all come together nicely. That means one of the best Max shows' second season will debut two months earlier than Matt Smith, who plays Daemon Targaryen, seemingly revealed on a January edition of the UK's Zoe Ball Breakfast Show. In the wake of Smith's apparent revelation, HBO told TechRadar it had "nothing to announce" about House of the Dragon 2's rumored release date.

Because of that history, anything set in the Game of Thrones world that comes after has a lot to live up to. But whether this show can ever reach the same heights as its predecessor remains to be seen. If watching brutal and gory scenes isn’t your thing, that may be a good reason to skip this prequel. The first episode of House of the Dragon features a few notable moments that went above and beyond in terms of what they showed, to the point where we had a hard time sleeping after screening it. “This series begins at the pinnacle of the dynasty, the height of power and wealth and influence, with the most dragons they’ll ever have.

Discovery's Head of Streaming J.B. Perrette confirmed season 2 would be released in June a few weeks before its official launch date was announced. The popular, R-rated high fantasy series will roar back onto our screens in June – and, with the Dance of the Dragons set to begin when it returns, you need to decide if you'll be supporting Team Black (the Targaryens) or Team Green (the Hightowers). Following the events of House of the Dragon Season 1 and the death of King Viserys I Targaryen, the world of Westeros is heading for a full-on civil war for the Iron Throne, known by most as the "Dance of the Dragons." House of the Dragon Season 2 will bring back many key cast members from the first season - including one particularly unexpected return - along with some newcomers. However, one major absentee will come through Paddy Considine's King Viserys I Targaryen after his death last season.

Two others will be Aegon himself, who seems to relish at the thought of going to war; and his brother Aemond Targaryen (Ewan Mitchell), who was last seen killing Rhaenyra's son Lucerys (Elliot Grihault) when he lost control of his dragon Vhagar. "Many weeks ago, my lord husband was alive and the realm was at peace," Alicent says, kicking off the trailer for the Green Council. "On his deathbed, he knew the realm would never accept a queen. Rhaenyra's supporters will believe what they wish, but Viserys wanted Aegon to succeed him." Though season 1 did not even allude to this character, Condal previously confirmed that Alicent's other son beyond Aegon and Aemond from the book does indeed exist on the show somewhere. "Freddie brought so much character and humor to Gwayne, who until this season was warded away at Oldtown," Condal explains of the city, which serves as the seat of House Hightower. "[He] grew up at Oldtown in his home base, but now that the Hightowers have been put out on the march, he's come to King's Landing to support his family's stake in the war."

In the meantime, check out the House of the Dragon Season 2 trailer above. Season 2 returning cast includes Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, Eve Best, Steve Toussaint, Fabien Frankel, Ewan Mitchell, Tom Glynn-Carney, Sonoya Mizuno, and Rhys Ifans. Additional returning cast includes Harry Collett, Bethany Antonia, Phoebe Campbell, Phia Saban, Jefferson Hall and Matthew Needham. Dive even deeper into the world of House of the Dragon to learn more about the characters and their connections, the dragons and their riders, and an interactive map of Westeros and Essos. They include Clinton Liberty as Addam of Hull, Jamie Kenna as Ser Alfred Broome, Kieran Bew as Hugh, Tom Bennett as Ulf, Tom Taylor as Lord Cregan Stark, and Vincent Regan as Ser Rickard Thorne. Still, as fast as that renewal was, it took longer to be renewed than Game of Thrones did.
