Looks like I'll be back on the phone with CenturyLink this morning. Although your posts are quite clear, I just don’t want to misinterpret their meaning. Based on your experiences and clarifications, I will feel safe entering my porting process. Upgrade your home or business phone service for less with Community Phone. Transferring your landline to a cell phone allows you to move your current landline number to a cell phone.
Additionally, forwarding calls with CenturyLink can be expensive, complicated, and time-consuming. Contact the other provider and tell them you want to transfer your CenturyLink number.
If I have problems with calls after I transfer my number, who should I contact?
I don't have direct experience myself, but know of a few people in my general area that ported their CTL landline number over to a mobile service. On Monday morning I called CenturyLink to be sure the phone service had been removed from my account. They said the change was "in process" and that it should be completed in a couple of days. Some time between Monday evening and Tuesday morning, my DSL went down. When I rebooted my modem/router Tuesday morning, it came back up and has been up ever since.
Loyal customers often save business numbers on their phone, so changing your number could lead to confusion or even lost business. You may also use your number on physical branding materials that can be difficult and expensive to change, such as large signs or business cards. For all these reasons, you may not want to change your business phone number if you have to change phone providers. Legacy Level 3 porting
In order to set up call forwarding through customer service, you will need your Account and PIN numbers. Not all landline numbers can be parked or forwarded. Manage your account preferences and billing information online.
Simply put, no landline - no call forwarding. Many people are reluctant to forward calls, worried that their cell phones will be bombarded with the telemarketers and robocalls they get on their landline. Porting: Keeping Your Phone Number When You Change Providers

You are not able to port it directly to google voice, that is why I had to port it to T-moble first. I also had DirecTV billed through CL to get the TriplePlay package discounts. Changing the account number screwed up that billing for 8 months. The DirecTV charges went into a black hole for 8 months before they finally sent me a bill directly for $1200 of back months' service.
All calls placed to your number will be received on your cell phone. Your landline services will be disconnected. If you're switching service providers and remaining in the same geographic area, you can keep your existing phone number.

Numbers can be ported between wireless, IP and wired services, so you can transfer your number even if you switch the type of service. If you plan to move your small business, you also might want to maintain your number rather than switch to a new area code. It means you will be able to transfer your local number to a wireless provider. It will then be their responsibility to provide your phone service to that number.
In today’s fast-paced life, you do not want to turn call forwarding on/off manually. You can now receive calls from your landline on your cell phone. Opt for landline texting over bulk messaging to build rapport with your customers, create a connection, and build customer loyalty. If, at any point you wish to cancel your landline service with CenturyLink, you will no longer retain your call forwarding feature. It is a feature offered in association with your basic home phone plan and cannot be used separately.

Keep in mind these features will be available for free through certain home phone service and will be costly with others. Call Blocking Services
What should I do to make this process go as smoothly as possible and minimize the down time? Once Selective Call Forwarding is on, you will not be able to answer incoming calls from forwarded numbers on your landline phones. You can continue to make and receive calls from your landline number while significantly reducing your monthly bill with Community Phone's landline transferring service.
You will still be able to make outgoing calls while call forwarding is on. Each time a call is forwarded, your phone will make one short ring. This feature allows you to have all incoming calls ring at an alternate number of your choosing. You will be responsible for any contract termination charges on any products for which there are contract terms or conditions. Any remaining balances for your canceled services will be due.
